What is Nitrazepam?
Nitrazepam belongs to the group of benzodiazepines. It is chemically known as 1,3-dihydro-2H-1.4-benzodiazepine-2-one. They are known by many names such as neozepam, Imeson, Mogadon, nelmat, etc. Nitrazepam has multiple effects on the organ system such as “calming effect” on the mind, induces sleep and improves sleep, reduces anxiety, and produces hypnotism. They also have muscle relaxant, anti-convulsant (fits), and sedative actions. Anxiolytics are a group of drugs that control the symptoms of anxiety, produce a restful state of mind without interfering with normal mental or physical functions. Adding to its anxiolytic actions, it is also a hypnotic or sleep-inducing drug. Nitrazepam induces and/or maintains normal arousable sleep. It is also used to treat insomnia. It relaxes the voluntary muscles by not causing any change to the functioning of the involuntary muscles. This means that actions such as breathing, digestion does not get affected by this drug and concomitantly relaxes the muscles of the limbs, spine, and others. It reduces the epileptic attacks immediately. Nitrazepam works very well in controlling seizures in infants. These are categorized as schedule IV drugs, which are available on a doctor’s prescription. Nitrazepam is also known to have a low potential for abuse and dependence.
How does it work?
Nitrazepam acts on a particular network system in the midbrain called “GABA-RECEPTOR CHLORINE CHANNEL COMPLEX” (gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain) which controls and maintains the ‘wakefulness” of the person and also the thought and mental functions. They also depress the central nervous system, by acting as a tranquilizer with an anti-epileptic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and amnestic properties. 5-10 mg is considered as the hypnotic dose and anxiolytic dose. It causes a drop in blood pressure due to a decrease in the pumping action of the heart. It causes muscle relation centrally by acting on all voluntary muscles and very minimally on involuntary muscles. Its hypnotic actions are brought about by fastening the onset of sleep, reducing intermittent awakening, and an increase in total sleep time.
What are the benefits of taking it?
